The Ashtottara Shatanamavali is the garland of 108 names, the form of worship in which each name is offered like a flower, spoken with Om before it and namah (salutation) after it. The number 108 is the sacred count of the japa mala, so the namavali is both a hymn and a complete round of practice: one name per bead. These 108 names of Shiva, drawn from the Shiva Purana tradition, move through his whole nature: the gentle names (Shambhu the source of happiness, Mrida the gracious), the fierce ones (Kalakala the death of death, Tripurantaka), the cosmic ones (Ashtamurti of eight forms, Vyomakesha whose hair is the sky), and the stories compressed into single words: Gangadhara who caught the river, Nilalohita whose throat holds the poison, Dakshadhvarahara who ended Daksha's sacrifice. It is recited during Shivalinga worship, on Mondays, through Shravan, and on Mahashivratri, often while offering a bilva leaf with each name.
