Whoever recites this sacred Lingashtakam in the presence of Shiva attains the realm of Shiva. There, in that supreme abode beyond all worlds, the devotee rejoices in eternal union with Shiva himself.

Attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, this eight-verse hymn celebrates the Shiva Linga as the supreme symbol of formless divinity. Behind it stands the Purana's great story: Brahma and Vishnu, disputing which of them was supreme, beheld a pillar of light with neither top nor bottom. Vishnu dove downward as a boar and Brahma flew upward as a swan, each seeking its end for thousands of years, and neither found one. The linga is that pillar in miniature: the form that admits it cannot contain what it represents. Each verse ends with the refrain 'I bow to that eternal Sada Shiva Linga,' and the hymn describes how all beings, from Brahma and Vishnu to the Siddhas and Asuras, worship that same measureless reality.
आदि शंकराचार्य को समर्पित, यह आठ श्लोकों का स्तोत्र शिवलिंग को निराकार दिव्यता के परम प्रतीक के रूप में स्तुति करता है। इसके पीछे पुराणों की महान कथा है: ब्रह्मा और विष्णु में श्रेष्ठता का विवाद हुआ, तभी उनके सम्मुख एक ऐसा ज्योतिर्मय स्तम्भ प्रकट हुआ जिसका न आदि था न अन्त। विष्णु वराह बनकर नीचे गए और ब्रह्मा हंस बनकर ऊपर उड़े, सहस्रों वर्ष दोनों उसके छोर खोजते रहे, पर किसी को छोर नहीं मिला। शिवलिंग उसी स्तम्भ का लघु रूप है: वह आकार जो स्वयं स्वीकार करता है कि जिसका वह प्रतीक है उसे समेट नहीं सकता। प्रत्येक श्लोक 'तत्प्रणमामि सदाशिवलिंगम्' के पल्लव के साथ समाप्त होता है, और स्तोत्र बताता है कि ब्रह्मा-विष्णु से लेकर सिद्धों और असुरों तक सभी उसी अपरिमेय सत्य की पूजा करते हैं।
