तीन दल वाला, तीन गुणों के आकार वाला, त्रिनेत्र और त्रिआयुध के समान, तीन जन्मों के पापों का नाश करने वाला: यह एक बिल्वपत्र मैं शिव को अर्पित करता हूं।

Traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, the Bilvashtakam is eight verses in praise of the bilva leaf, the trifoliate leaf held most sacred to Shiva. Each verse ends with the refrain Ekabilvam Shivarpanam, "this single bilva leaf I offer to Shiva," and each declares that this one simple leaf, offered with devotion, outweighs the grandest gifts and sacrifices. The three leaflets are seen as the three gunas, the Lord's three eyes, and the trident, so that the whole of Shiva's nature rests in what the poorest devotee can pluck from a tree. It is recited especially during the month of Shravan and on Mahashivratri, whenever bilva leaves are laid upon the Shivalinga.
परम्परा से आदि शंकराचार्य को समर्पित बिल्वाष्टकम् आठ श्लोकों में बिल्वपत्र की महिमा गाता है, जो शिव को सर्वाधिक प्रिय त्रिदल पत्र है। प्रत्येक श्लोक "एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम्" के साथ समाप्त होता है और यह घोषणा करता है कि भक्तिपूर्वक अर्पित यह एक साधारण पत्र बड़े से बड़े दान और यज्ञों से भी अधिक फलदायी है। तीन दल तीन गुणों, भगवान के तीन नेत्रों और त्रिशूल के प्रतीक माने जाते हैं। श्रावण मास और महाशिवरात्रि पर, जब शिवलिंग पर बिल्वपत्र चढ़ाए जाते हैं, इसका विशेष पाठ होता है।
