Attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, the Kal Bhairav Ashtakam praises Bhairava, the fierce form of Shiva who is the eternal guardian of Kashi. Tradition holds that no pilgrimage to Varanasi is complete without his darshan, for he is the city's kotwal, its divine magistrate, who examines the deeds of all who dwell and die there. Each of the eight verses ends with the refrain Kashika Puradhinatha Kalabhairavam Bhaje: I worship Kal Bhairav, lord of the city of Kashi. The hymn holds his two faces in one frame: the terror whose laughter shatters the shells of universes and whose glance annihilates the webs of sin, and the tender protector who unties the knots of karma, destroys the arrogance of death itself, and delivers his devotees across the ocean of existence. It is recited especially on Bhairav Ashtami, on Sundays, and by those seeking protection and release from fear.

He is the death of death itself, lotus-eyed, bearing the imperishable trident:

नीलकण्ठ, त्रिनेत्र, मनोवांछित फल देने वाले;
काल के भी काल, कमलनयन, अविनाशी त्रिशूलधारी:
मैं काशीपुरी के अधिनाथ कालभैरव को भजता हूं।
dark-bodied, the primal god, imperishable, beyond all disease.
Of terrifying valor, the Lord who delights in the wondrous tandava dance:

श्याम शरीर वाले, आदिदेव, अक्षर, निरामय;
भीम पराक्रमी प्रभु, विचित्र ताण्डव के प्रेमी:
मैं काशीपुरी के अधिनाथ कालभैरव को भजता हूं।
tender toward his devotees, standing as the embodiment of all the worlds;
about his waist, golden bells chime with an enchanting sound:

भक्तवत्सल, समस्त लोकों के रूप में स्थित;

he unties the binding ropes of karma and bestows the highest happiness.
His limbs are adorned with the golden coils of the serpent king:

कर्मपाश से मुक्त करने वाले, कल्याण देने वाले प्रभु;
स्वर्ण वर्ण के सर्पों से सुशोभित अंगों वाले:
मैं काशीपुरी के अधिनाथ कालभैरव को भजता हूं।
eternal, without a second, the cherished deity, free of every stain.
He crushes the arrogance of death, and his fearsome fangs set souls free:

नित्य, अद्वितीय, इष्ट देवता, निरंजन;
मृत्यु के दर्प का नाश करने वाले, जिनकी कराल दाढ़ें मुक्त करती हैं:
मैं काशीपुरी के अधिनाथ कालभैरव को भजता हूं।
the mere fall of his glance annihilates the entire web of sins; his rule is fierce.
Giver of the eight great attainments, wearing a garland of skulls:
I worship Kal Bhairav, the supreme lord of the city of Kashi. जिनके अट्टहास से ब्रह्मा के ब्रह्माण्डों के कोश फूट जाते हैं,
जिनकी दृष्टि पड़ते ही पापों का जाल नष्ट हो जाता है, जिनका शासन उग्र है;
अष्ट सिद्धियां देने वाले, कपालों की माला धारण करने वाले:
मैं काशीपुरी के अधिनाथ कालभैरव को भजता हूं।
he examines the merits and sins of all who dwell in Kashi;
master of the path of justice, ancient of days, the lord of the world:
I worship Kal Bhairav, the supreme lord of the city of Kashi. भूतगणों के नायक, विशाल कीर्ति देने वाले,
काशीवासियों के पुण्य-पाप का शोधन करने वाले प्रभु;
नीति-मार्ग में निपुण, पुरातन, जगत के स्वामी:
मैं काशीपुरी के अधिनाथ कालभैरव को भजता हूं।
a means to knowledge and liberation, a wondrous increaser of merit,
a destroyer of sorrow, delusion, poverty, greed, anger, and affliction,
shall surely attain the presence of Kal Bhairav's feet. जो इस मनोहर कालभैरवाष्टक का पाठ करते हैं,
जो ज्ञान और मुक्ति का साधन है और विचित्र पुण्य बढ़ाने वाला,
शोक, मोह, दैन्य, लोभ, क्रोध और ताप का नाश करने वाला:
वे निश्चय ही कालभैरव के चरणों की सन्निधि पाते हैं।
