Om. Narayana, the divine, has a thousand heads, all-pervading eyes, and is the source of all well-being. He is the entire universe; He is the imperishable supreme reality, the ultimate abode.
विश्वतः परमं नित्यं विश्वं नारायणं हरिम्। विश्वमेवेदं पुरुषस्तद्विश्वमुपजीवति॥
Vishvatah Paramam Nityam Vishvam Narayanam Harim Vishvam Evedam Purushas Tad Vishvam Upajivati
Narayana, the supreme and eternal, transcends the universe yet pervades it as Hari, the remover of sorrow. All of this cosmos is that Purusha; the entire universe lives and breathes within Him.
पतिं विश्वस्यात्मेश्वरं शाश्वतं शिवमच्युतम्। नारायणं महाज्ञेयं विश्वात्मानं परायणम्॥
Patim Vishvasyatmeshvaram Shashvatam Shivam Achyutam Narayanam Maha Jneyam Vishvatmanam Parayanam
He is the lord of the universe, the ruler of the inner self, eternal, auspicious, and ever steadfast. Narayana is the great object of all knowledge, the soul of all worlds, and the supreme refuge.
नारायणपरं ब्रह्म तत्त्वं नारायणः परः। नारायणपरो ज्योतिरात्मा नारायणः परः॥
Narayana Param Brahma Tattvam Narayanah Parah Narayana Paro Jyotir Atma Narayanah Parah
The supreme Brahman is Narayana; the ultimate truth and essence is Narayana, beyond all else. The supreme light is Narayana; the inner self is Narayana, the highest.
नारायणपरो ध्याता नारायणपरं ध्यानम्। नारायणपरो धर्मस्तत्त्वं नारायणः परः॥
Narayana Paro Dhyata Narayana Param Dhyanam Narayana Paro Dharmas Tattvam Narayanah Parah
The supreme object of meditation is Narayana; the supreme meditation itself is Narayana. The supreme righteousness and law is Narayana; He alone is the highest truth in all existence.
यच्च किञ्चिज्जगत्सर्वं दृश्यते श्रूयतेऽपि वा। अन्तर्बहिश्च तत्सर्वं व्याप्य नारायणः स्थितः॥
Yach Cha Kinchij Jagat Sarvam Drishyate Shruyate Api Va Antar Bahish Cha Tat Sarvam Vyapya Narayanah Sthitah
Whatever in this whole world is seen or even heard of, Narayana pervades it all, within and without, and remains established in everything.
अनन्तमव्ययं कविं समुद्रेऽन्तं विश्वशम्भुवम्। पद्मकोशप्रतीकाशं हृदयं चाप्यधोमुखम्॥
Anantam Avyayam Kavim Samudre Antam Vishva Shambhuvam Padma Kosha Pratikasham Hridayam Chapy Adhomukham
He is infinite, imperishable, the all-seeing seer, the farther shore of the cosmic ocean, the source of all well-being. And here the hymn turns inward: like the closed bud of a lotus, the heart hangs with its face turned downward.
अधो निष्ट्या वितस्त्यान्ते नाभ्यामुपरि तिष्ठति। ज्वालमालाकुलं भाति विश्वस्यायतनं महत्॥
Adho Nishtya Vitastyante Nabhyam Upari Tishthati Jvala Mala Kulam Bhati Vishvasya Ayatanam Mahat
A hand-span below the throat and above the navel it dwells, wreathed in garlands of flame it shines: the great dwelling place of the entire universe, hidden inside the human breast.
सन्ततं शिलाभिस्तु लम्बत्या कोशसन्निभम्। तस्यान्ते सुषिरं सूक्ष्मं तस्मिन् सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम्॥
Santatam Shilabhis Tu Lambatya Kosha Sannibham Tasyante Sushiram Sukshmam Tasmin Sarvam Pratishthitam
Surrounded by the veins on every side, the heart hangs down like a lotus bud; at its tip is a subtle opening, and within that fine space, all things rest.
तस्य मध्ये महानग्निर्विश्वार्चिर्विश्वतोमुखः। सोऽग्रभुग्विभजन्तिष्ठन्नाहारमजरः कविः॥
Tasya Madhye Mahan Agnir Vishvarchir Vishvato Mukhah So Agrabhug Vibhajan Tishthann Aharam Ajarah Kavih
In its center burns a great fire whose flames spread everywhere, whose faces turn in every direction. The first partaker of all nourishment, distributing it through the body, it abides there: the undecaying seer.
तिर्यगूर्ध्वमधःशायी रश्मयस्तस्य सन्तता। सन्तापयति स्वं देहमापादतलमस्तकः। तस्य मध्ये वह्निशिखा अणीयोर्ध्वा व्यवस्थिता॥
Tiryag Urdhvam Adhah Shayi Rashmayas Tasya Santata Santapayati Svam Deham Apada Tala Mastakah Tasya Madhye Vahni Shikha Aniyordhva Vyavasthita
Its rays stream out sideways, upward, and downward without ceasing, warming the whole body from the soles of the feet to the crown of the head. And in the very center of that fire stands a single tongue of flame, finer than fine, pointing upward.
नीलतोयदमध्यस्था विद्युल्लेखेव भास्वरा। नीवारशूकवत्तन्वी पीता भास्वत्यणूपमा॥
Nila Toyada Madhyastha Vidyul Lekheva Bhasvara Nivara Shukavat Tanvi Pita Bhasvaty Anupama
Luminous like a streak of lightning held inside a blue rain-cloud, slender as the awn of a grain of wild rice, golden, shining, subtle beyond compare.
तस्याः शिखाया मध्ये परमात्मा व्यवस्थितः। स ब्रह्म स शिवः स हरिः सेन्द्रः सोऽक्षरः परमः स्वराट्॥
Tasyah Shikhaya Madhye Paramatma Vyavasthitah Sa Brahma Sa Shivah Sa Harih Sendrah So Aksharah Paramah Svarat

Found in the Taittiriya Aranyaka of the Yajur Veda, the Narayana Suktam is one of the earliest Vedic texts to describe a supreme personal deity dwelling within the heart of every being. The hymn's imagery of a golden light the size of a thumb-flame burning in the heart center became foundational to later Hindu meditation traditions. It bridges the gap between the impersonal Brahman of the earlier Upanishads and the personal God of devotional Hinduism. As with all Vedic texts, it is traditionally recited with svaras, the pitch accents learned from a teacher; the plain text is presented here.
