Composed by Pandit Shardha Ram Phillauri in 1870 in Punjab, this aarti became so universally popular that many believe it to be ancient. Phillauri was a Sanskrit scholar and one of the first Hindi prose writers, and he wrote this hymn in simple, accessible Hindi so that ordinary households could perform evening worship. Within decades it spread across all of India and became the standard aarti sung in homes and temples regardless of regional tradition.
1870 में पंजाब में पंडित श्रद्धाराम फिल्लौरी द्वारा रचित, यह आरती इतनी लोकप्रिय हुई कि अनेक लोग इसे प्राचीन मानते हैं। फिल्लौरी एक संस्कृत विद्वान और प्रारंभिक हिंदी गद्य लेखकों में से एक थे, और उन्होंने इस स्तुति को सरल हिंदी में लिखा ताकि साधारण घरों में संध्या पूजा हो सके। कुछ ही दशकों में यह पूरे भारत में फैल गई और क्षेत्रीय परंपरा से परे, घरों और मंदिरों में गाई जाने वाली मानक आरती बन गई।
