His brow is vast and captivating, his gaze sidelong, his knitted brows fearsome: the crooked glance from which all beings pray to be spared.

कुण्डल श्रवण चमाचम चमके। हिय माल मुक्तन मणि दमके॥

In his hands are the mace, the trident, and the axe; in the space of a moment he destroys his enemies.
हाथों में गदा, त्रिशूल और कुठार हैं, जो पल भर में शत्रुओं का संहार कर देते हैं।

Under his glance a mountain becomes a blade of grass, and a blade of grass he can raise into a mountain: such is the power of Saturn's slow justice.
आपकी दृष्टि से पर्वत तृण हो जाता है, और तृण को आप पर्वत बना देते हैं।
राज मिलत बन रामहिं दीन्हयो। कैकेइहुँ की मति हरि लीन्हयो॥

On the day Rama was to receive his kingdom, Shani's period gave him the forest instead, stealing away the good sense of queen Kaikeyi.
राज्याभिषेक के दिन राम को वन मिला, जब आपने कैकेयी की मति हर ली।
बनहूँ में मृग कपट दिखाई। मातु जानकी गई चुराई॥
Banahun Mein Mrig Kapat Dikhai Matu Janaki Gai Churai
In the forest the false golden deer appeared, and mother Janaki was stolen away.
वन में कपटी स्वर्ण मृग दिखाकर माता जानकी चुरा ली गईं।
लखनहिं शक्ति विकल करिडारा। मचिगा दल में हाहाकारा॥

The shakti weapon struck Lakshmana senseless, and wailing broke out through the whole army.
लक्ष्मण को शक्ति लगी और वे व्याकुल हो गए, सेना में हाहाकार मच गया।

जब आपने राजा विक्रमादित्य पर पैर रखा, तो चित्र का मोर जीवित होकर हार निगल गया।
हार नौलखा लाग्यो चोरी। हाथ पैर डरवायो तोरी॥

The priceless nine-lakh necklace was declared stolen, and the innocent king had his hands and feet broken as a thief.
नौलखा हार की चोरी लगी, और निर्दोष राजा के हाथ-पैर तुड़वाए गए।
भारी दशा निकृष्ट दिखायो। तेलहिं घर कोल्हू चलवायो॥

वैसी ही दशा राजा नल पर बीती, कि भुनी हुई मछलियां भी पानी में कूद गईं।
श्री शंकरहिं गह्यो जब जाई। पारवती को सती कराई॥

When your period seized even Shri Shankara himself, Parvati was made to pass through the fire as Sati.
जब आपने श्री शंकर को जा पकड़ा, तो पार्वती को सती होना पड़ा।

पाण्डवों पर आपकी दशा आई, तो द्रौपदी वस्त्रहरण से बड़ी कठिनाई से बचीं।
कौरव के भी गति मति मारयो। युद्ध महाभारत करि डारयो॥
Kaurav Ke Bhi Gati Mati Marayo Yuddha Mahabharat Kari Darayo
You struck down the judgment and conduct of the Kauravas too, and brought about the great war of the Mahabharata.
कौरवों की भी गति-मति मारी गई, और महाभारत का युद्ध हो गया।

Seeing this, Shesha and the gods brought their entreaties, and you released the sun from your mouth.
यह देखकर शेष और देवताओं ने विनती की, तब आपने सूर्य को मुख से मुक्त किया।
वाहन प्रभु के सात सुजाना। जग दिग्गज गर्दभ मृग स्वाना॥
Vahan Prabhu Ke Sat Sujana Jag Diggaj Gardabh Mrig Svana
The lord's mounts, know them well, are seven: among them the elephant, the donkey, the deer, and the dog.
प्रभु के वाहन सात हैं, यह भली प्रकार जान लो: उनमें हाथी, गर्दभ, मृग और श्वान हैं।
जम्बुक सिंह आदि नख धारी। सो फल ज्योतिष कहत पुकारी॥

The jackal, the lion, and the other clawed bearers complete them, and astrology proclaims the fruit each mount brings when Shani arrives upon it.
गीदड़, सिंह आदि नखधारी शेष हैं, और ज्योतिष पुकारकर बताता है कि किस वाहन का क्या फल है।
गज वाहन लक्ष्मी गृह आवैं। हय ते सुख सम्पत्ति उपजावैं॥

Arriving on the elephant, he brings Lakshmi into the house; on the horse, happiness and wealth spring up.
हाथी पर आएं तो घर में लक्ष्मी आती हैं, घोड़े से सुख-सम्पत्ति उपजती है।
गर्दभ हानि करै बहु काजा। सिंह सिद्धकर राज समाजा॥
Gardabh Hani Karai Bahu Kaja Sinh Siddhakar Raj Samaja
On the donkey he brings loss to many undertakings; on the lion he grants accomplishment, standing, and honor among the great.
गर्दभ अनेक कार्यों में हानि करता है, सिंह सिद्धि और राज-समाज में मान देता है।
जम्बुक बुद्धि नष्ट कर डारै। मृग दे कष्ट प्राण संहारै॥
Jambuk Buddhi Nashta Kar Darai Mrig De Kashta Pran Samharai
On the jackal he lays waste to judgment; on the deer he brings suffering that threatens life itself.
गीदड़ बुद्धि नष्ट कर देता है, मृग कष्ट देता है और प्राणों का संहार करता है।
जब आवहिं प्रभु स्वान सवारी। चोरी आदि होय डर भारी॥
Jab Aavahin Prabhu Svan Savari Chori Aadi Hoy Dar Bhari
And when the lord arrives riding the dog, there is heavy fear of theft and loss.
जब प्रभु श्वान की सवारी पर आते हैं, तो चोरी आदि का भारी भय होता है।
तैसहि चारि चरण यह नामा। स्वर्ण लौह चांदी अरु तामा॥

The Shani Chalisa is a forty-verse hymn to Shani, the son of the sun god Surya and the lord of the planet Saturn, whose slow gaze is believed to test every being, god and mortal alike, through hardship that ultimately teaches justice and humility. The chalisa is remarkable for its honesty about this: rather than pretending Shani away, it recounts the great ones who passed through his period of trial, Rama exiled on the day he was to be crowned, King Vikramaditya falsely accused and set to turning an oil press, Harishchandra sold into servitude, even Shiva and Ganesha touched by his glance. The hymn's promise is not that trials will never come, but that the one who remembers Shani with devotion passes through them upright. It carries the signature of the poet Ramsundar Das and is recited above all on Saturdays, often with offerings of water to the peepal tree and the lighting of a sesame-oil lamp.

तो पार्वती को सती होना पड़ा।

और महाभारत का युद्ध हो गया।

और लेकर पाताल में कूद गए।

तब आपने सूर्य को मुख से मुक्त किया।

among them the elephant, the donkey, the deer, and the dog. प्रभु के वाहन सात हैं, यह भली प्रकार जान लो:
उनमें हाथी, गर्दभ, मृग और श्वान हैं।

and astrology proclaims the fruit each mount brings when Shani arrives upon it. गीदड़, सिंह आदि नखधारी शेष हैं,

on the horse, happiness and wealth spring up. हाथी पर आएं तो घर में लक्ष्मी आती हैं,

on the lion he grants accomplishment, standing, and honor among the great. गर्दभ अनेक कार्यों में हानि करता है,

स्वर्ण, लोहा, चांदी और तांबा।
धन जन सम्पत्ति नष्ट करावैं॥

wealth, kin, and property are brought to ruin. लोहे के चरण पर जब प्रभु आते हैं,
तो धन, जन और सम्पत्ति नष्ट कराते हैं।

and gold brings every happiness and abundant blessing. तांबा समता देता है, चांदी शुभकारी है,
और स्वर्ण सर्व सुख और भारी मंगल।

the harshest period will never torment them. जो यह शनि चरित्र नित्य गाता है,
