As a child You leapt up and swallowed the sun, and the three worlds fell into darkness. The universe trembled in a distress that no power could remove, until the gods came pleading and You released the sun and ended the affliction. बाल्यकाल में आपने सूर्य को निगल लिया, तो तीनों लोकों में अंधेरा छा गया। सारे जगत पर ऐसा संकट आया जिसे कोई टाल नहीं सका। देवताओं ने आकर विनती की, तब आपने सूर्य को छोड़कर कष्ट दूर किया। जग में कौन नहीं जानता, हे कपि, कि आपका नाम संकटमोचन है?

In terror of Vali, the monkey king Sugriva lived hidden on the mountain, watching the path for the great Lord. Startled and wary because of a great sage's curse, what was to be done, and who would think it through? बालि के त्रास से कपीश सुग्रीव पर्वत पर बसे महाप्रभु की राह देखते थे। महामुनि के शाप से चौंककर, क्या उपाय हो, कौन विचार करे? द्विज रूप धरकर आप महाप्रभु को ले आए, और अपने दास का शोक मिटाया। जग में कौन नहीं जानता, हे कपि, कि आपका नाम संकटमोचन है?

Sent with Angada in search of Sita, the monkey king's warning rang in every ear: return without news of her, and none of you will leave here alive. The searchers stood exhausted at the ocean's shore, until You leapt across, brought word of Sita, and saved every life. अंगद के संग सीता की खोज में गए, तो कपीश ने यह वचन कहा: बिना सुधि लाए जो यहां पैर रखेगा, वह जीवित नहीं बचेगा। समुद्र तट पर सब खोजते-खोजते थक गए, तब आपने सीता की सुधि लाकर सबके प्राण बचाए। जग में कौन नहीं जानता, हे कपि, कि आपका नाम संकटमोचन है?

Ravana filled Sita's days with terror, setting his rakshasis upon her to break her heart in the Ashoka grove. In that very hour You came, O mighty Hanuman, and struck down the great demons. As Sita, despairing, was asking the Ashoka tree for fire, You dropped the Lord's own ring into her lap and lifted her sorrow. Who in this world does not know Your name, O Kapi: Sankat Mochan, remover of every crisis?

रावण ने सीता को त्रास दिया और राक्षसियों से कहलाकर शोक बढ़ाया। उसी समय, हे महाप्रभु हनुमान, आपने जाकर महान निशाचरों को मारा। अशोक वृक्ष से सीता अग्नि मांग रही थीं, तब प्रभु की मुद्रिका देकर आपने उनका शोक मिटाया। जग में कौन नहीं जानता, हे कपि, कि आपका नाम संकटमोचन है?

When Ravana's son loosed the arrow that pierced Lakshmana's chest and life began to leave him, You carried the physician Sushena to Lanka, house and all, then tore the mountain Drona from the earth; placing the sanjivani herb in the healer's hand in time, You gave Lakshmana back his life. जब रावण-पुत्र का बाण लक्ष्मण के हृदय में लगा और प्राण जाने लगे, तब आप वैद्य सुषेण को घर सहित ले आए और द्रोण पर्वत उखाड़ लाए। समय पर संजीवनी हाथ में देकर आपने लक्ष्मण के प्राण बचाए। जग में कौन नहीं जानता, हे कपि, कि आपका नाम संकटमोचन है?

In battle the serpent-noose was cast over every head, binding even Shri Raghunatha and all His host, and a heavy bewilderment fell upon the army: a crisis beyond all remedy. रावण ने छल का युद्ध किया और सबके सिर पर नागपाश डाल दिया। श्री रघुनाथ सहित सारी सेना मोहित हो गई; यह भारी संकट आया। तब आप खगराज गरुड़ को ले आए, जिन्होंने बन्धन काटकर त्रास मिटाया। जग में कौन नहीं जानता, हे कपि, कि आपका नाम संकटमोचन है?

जब अहिरावण भाई सहित रघुनाथ को पाताल ले गया, और देवी की विधिवत पूजा करके सबके साथ बलि देने का मंत्र विचारा, तभी आप सहायता को पहुंचे और सेना सहित अहिरावण का संहार किया। जग में कौन नहीं जानता, हे कपि, कि आपका नाम संकटमोचन है?

Composed by the poet-saint Tulsidas, the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Ashtak is eight stanzas, each recounting a moment when Hanuman removed a crisis that no one else could resolve: swallowing the sun as a child, uniting Rama with Sugriva, finding Sita across the ocean, comforting her in the Ashoka grove, fetching the sanjivani herb for the dying Lakshmana, freeing the army from the serpent-noose, and rescuing Rama and Lakshmana from the netherworld of Ahiravana. Every stanza ends with the same refrain: who in this world does not know Hanuman by the name Sankat Mochan, the remover of crises? Having recited His deeds for the gods and for Rama Himself, the final stanza turns the refrain into a plea: surely, then, my small trouble is not beyond You. It is recited especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays, often alongside the Hanuman Chalisa.
