जब अनुपम यज्ञ पूर्ण हुआ, तब आप द्विज रूप धरकर पहुंचे।
अतिथि जानि कै गौरि सुखारी। बहुविधि सेवा करी तुम्हारी॥

अतिथि जानकर गौरी सुखी हुईं, और बहुत प्रकार से आपकी सेवा की।

Greatly pleased, you granted the boon: the penance the mother had made for a son would bear its fruit.
अति प्रसन्न होकर आपने वर दिया: माता ने पुत्र के लिए जो तप किया है, वह सफल होगा।
मिलहि पुत्र तुहि, बुद्धि विशाला। बिना गर्भ धारण, यहि काला॥

A son of vast intelligence shall be yours, without the bearing of a womb, and in this very hour.
तुम्हें विशाल बुद्धि वाला पुत्र मिलेगा, बिना गर्भ धारण के, इसी काल में।
गणनायक, गुण ज्ञान निधाना। पूजित प्रथम, रुप भगवाना॥

So saying, the brahmin vanished from sight, and upon the cradle appeared the form of an infant.
ऐसा कहकर वह रूप अन्तर्धान हो गया, और पालने पर बालक स्वरूप प्रकट हुआ।
बनि शिशु, रुदन जबहिं तुम ठाना। लखि मुख सुख नहिं गौरि समाना॥
Bani Shishu, Rudan Jabahin Tum Thana Lakhi Mukh Sukh Nahin Gauri Samana
When as a newborn you set up your crying, Gauri looked upon your face with a joy her heart could not contain.
शिशु बनकर जब आपने रुदन किया, तो मुख देखकर गौरी का सुख समाया नहीं।
सकल मगन, सुखमंगल गावहिं। नभ ते सुरन, सुमन वर्षावहिं॥
Sakal Magan, Sukh Mangal Gavahin Nabh Te Suran, Suman Varshavahin
All were immersed in gladness, singing songs of blessing, while from the sky the gods rained down flowers.
सब आनन्दमग्न होकर मंगल गाने लगे, आकाश से देवता फूल बरसाने लगे।
शम्भु, उमा, बहु दान लुटावहिं। सुर मुनिजन, सुत देखन आवहिं॥

Shambhu and Uma gave away gifts in abundance, as gods and sages came streaming to see the child.
शम्भु और उमा ने बहुत दान लुटाए, देवता और मुनिजन पुत्र को देखने आए।
लखि अति आनन्द मंगल साजा। देखन भी आये शनि राजा॥

Beholding the great festival of joy, King Shani, the lord of Saturn, also came to see.
यह आनन्द-मंगल का उत्सव देखकर शनि राजा भी दर्शन को आए।
निज अवगुण गुनि शनि मन माहीं। बालक, देखन चाहत नाहीं॥
Nij Avgun Guni Shani Man Mahin Balak, Dekhan Chahat Nahin
But mindful in his heart of the flaw of his own gaze, Shani did not wish to look upon the child.
अपनी दृष्टि का दोष मन में जानकर शनि बालक को देखना नहीं चाहते थे।
गिरिजा कछु मन भेद बढ़ायो। उत्सव मोर, न शनि तुहि भायो॥
Girija Kachhu Man Bhed Badhayo Utsav Mor, Na Shani Tuhi Bhayo
Girija felt a shadow of hurt rise in her heart: is my festival not pleasing to you, Shani?
गिरिजा के मन में कुछ खेद हुआ: क्या मेरा उत्सव, हे शनि, तुम्हें नहीं भाया?
कहन लगे शनि, मन सकुचाई। का करिहौ, शिशु मोहि दिखाई॥
Kahan Lage Shani, Man Sakuchai Ka Kariho, Shishu Mohi Dikhai
Shani answered, shrinking within himself: what will you do if showing me the child brings harm?
शनि संकुचित मन से कहने लगे: शिशु को दिखाने से कहीं अनर्थ न हो जाए।
नहिं विश्वास, उमा उर भयऊ। शनि सों बालक देखन कहयऊ॥
Nahin Vishvas, Uma Ur Bhayau Shani Son Balak Dekhan Kahayau
But no belief in the danger arose in Uma's heart, and she told Shani to look upon the boy.
पर उमा के हृदय में विश्वास नहीं हुआ, उन्होंने शनि से बालक देखने को कहा।
पड़तहिं, शनि दृग कोण प्रकाशा। बालक सिर उड़ि गयो अकाशा॥

The instant the corner of Shani's glance fell upon him, the child's head flew up into the sky.
शनि की दृष्टि का कोण पड़ते ही बालक का सिर आकाश में उड़ गया।
गिरिजा गिरीं विकल है धरणी। सो दुख दशा गयो नहीं वरणी॥
Girija Girin Vikal Hai Dharani So Dukh Dasha Gayo Nahin Varani
Girija fell senseless to the earth; that state of grief no words can describe.
गिरिजा व्याकुल होकर धरती पर गिर पड़ीं, उस दुख की दशा का वर्णन नहीं हो सकता।
हाहाकार मच्यो कैलाशा। शनि कीन्हों लखि सुत का नाशा॥
Hahakar Machyo Kailasha Shani Kinhon Lakhi Sut Ka Nasha
Wailing filled all of Kailasha when they saw the child destroyed by Shani's glance.
कैलाश पर हाहाकार मच गया, जब शनि द्वारा पुत्र का नाश देखा।
तुरत गरुड़ चढ़ि विष्णु सिधाये। काटि चक्र सो गज शिर लाये॥
Turat Garud Chadhi Vishnu Sidhaye Kati Chakra So Gaj Shir Laye
At once Vishnu mounted Garuda and sped away; with his discus he cut and brought back the head of an elephant.
तुरन्त विष्णु गरुड़ पर चढ़कर गए, और चक्र से काटकर गज का सिर ले आए।
बालक के धड़ ऊपर धारयो। प्राण, मन्त्र पढ़ि शंकर डारयो॥
Balak Ke Dhad Upar Dharayo Pran, Mantra Padhi Shankar Darayo
He set it upon the child's body, and Shankara, chanting the mantra, breathed the life back in.
उसे बालक के धड़ पर रखा, और शंकर ने मंत्र पढ़कर प्राण डाले।
नाम गणेश शम्भु तब कीन्हे। प्रथम पूज्य बुद्धि निधि, वर दीन्हे॥

When Shiva set the test of wisdom, the task was to circle the whole earth and return.
जब शिव ने बुद्धि की परीक्षा ली, तो कार्य था पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा करके लौटना।
चले षडानन, भरमि भुलाई। रचे बैठ तुम बुद्धि उपाई॥
Chale Shadanan, Bharami Bhulai Rache Baith Tum Buddhi Upai
Six-faced Kartikeya sped away and wandered the wide world astray, while you sat still and devised the way of wisdom.
षडानन दौड़ पड़े और भ्रम में भटकते रहे, पर आपने बैठे-बैठे बुद्धि का उपाय रचा।
चरण मातु-पितु के धर लीन्हें। तिनके सात प्रदक्षिण कीन्हें॥

You bowed to the feet of your mother and father and walked around them seven times: for the parents contain the universe.
माता-पिता के चरण पकड़कर आपने उनकी सात परिक्रमा की।
धनि गणेश, कहि शिव हिय हरषे। नभ ते सुरन, सुमन बहु बरसे॥

Blessed is Ganesha, said Shiva, his heart delighting, while from the sky the gods showered blossoms in abundance.
धन्य गणेश, कहकर शिव हृदय में हर्षित हुए, और आकाश से देवताओं ने बहुत फूल बरसाए।
तुम्हरी महिमा बुद्धि बड़ाई। शेष सहसमुख सके न गाई॥

The Ganesh Chalisa is a hymn of praise to Ganesha in Awadhi, composed by the poet Ramsundar Das, who names himself and his home near holy Prayag in its closing verses. After the loving description of the Lord's form, the elephant face, the curved trunk, the mouse waiting at the door, the heart of the chalisa is the full telling of Ganesha's birth story: Gauri's penance for a son, the boy struck lifeless by the glance of Shani, Vishnu racing on Garuda to bring back an elephant's head, and Shiva breathing life into the child and declaring him first among all who are worshipped. It closes with the famous test of wisdom, in which Kartikeya races around the world while Ganesha simply circles his parents seven times, knowing that mother and father contain the universe. It is recited especially on Wednesdays, on Ganesh Chaturthi, and at the start of any new undertaking.

King Shani, the lord of Saturn, also came to see. यह आनन्द-मंगल का उत्सव देखकर
शनि राजा भी दर्शन को आए।

what will you do if showing me the child brings harm? शनि संकुचित मन से कहने लगे:
शिशु को दिखाने से कहीं अनर्थ न हो जाए।

उन्होंने शनि से बालक देखने को कहा।
बालक सिर उड़ि गयो अकाशा॥

बालक का सिर आकाश में उड़ गया।
सो दुख दशा गयो नहीं वरणी॥

उस दुख की दशा का वर्णन नहीं हो सकता।
शनि कीन्हों लखि सुत का नाशा॥

जब शनि द्वारा पुत्र का नाश देखा।
काटि चक्र सो गज शिर लाये॥

और चक्र से काटकर गज का सिर ले आए।

और शंकर ने मंत्र पढ़कर प्राण डाले।

and walked around them seven times: for the parents contain the universe. माता-पिता के चरण पकड़कर
आपने उनकी सात परिक्रमा की।

while from the sky the gods showered blossoms in abundance. धन्य गणेश, कहकर शिव हृदय में हर्षित हुए,
और आकाश से देवताओं ने बहुत फूल बरसाए।

द्वार पर मूषक वाहन शोभा देता है।
