By first uttering the syllable of the Ganas, then the first letter of the alphabet, then the nasal resonance, illumined by the crescent moon and made perfect by the transcendent Om: this is Your sacred mantra-form. The letter 'Ga' is the initial form, 'A' is the middle form, the anusvara is the final form, the bindu is the supreme form, and the nada is the unifying sound that binds them all. This is the Ganesha-Vidya: the sacred knowledge of Ganapati, with Ganaka as the seer, Nichrit-Gayatri as the meter, and Ganapati himself as the presiding deity.

Om, Gam; salutation to Ganapati. We know the Single-Tusked One, the remover of obstacles who concentrates the infinite into one point. We meditate upon the Curved-Trunk, whose form embodies the spiral of cosmic energy. May that tusked one illuminate and direct our awakening.

The single-tusked one with four hands holds the noose and the goad, the tusk and the boon-bestowing gesture, with the mouse as His emblem. His form is red with a vast, generous belly and ears like winnowing fans; He is clothed in red and anointed with red fragrant paste. Worshipped with red flowers, His entire being radiates the color of primal energy, of the rising sun, of life itself pulsing at the root of creation.

Whoever studies this Atharvashirsha becomes fit to realize Brahman, the supreme truth. All obstacles cease to bind them; joy and well-being increase in every direction of their life. They are liberated from the five great errors that obscure the Self. Reciting it at evening destroys the transgressions of the day; reciting it at dawn destroys the transgressions of the night. One who recites it both at dawn and at dusk becomes free from the residue of past actions, free from obstacles everywhere, and attains the fourfold fulfillment: righteousness, prosperity, love, and liberation.

By Vedic Rishis (Atharva Veda tradition) · 12 Verses · Ancient (Upanishadic era) वैदिक ऋषि (अथर्ववेद परंपरा) · 12 श्लोक · Ancient (Upanishadic era)
This Upanishad from the Atharva Veda tradition is unique in declaring Ganesha to be identical with the ultimate reality, Brahman itself. While most Upanishads focus on abstract principles, this text boldly identifies the elephant-headed deity as the supreme consciousness from which the entire universe emanates and into which it dissolves. It is traditionally recited before beginning any new venture, sacred study, or ritual, honoring Ganesha's role as the remover of obstacles and the lord of beginnings.
