Mahishasura Mardini Stotram महिषासुर मर्दिनी स्तोत्र
By Adi Shankaracharya (attributed) · 21 Verses · ~8th Century CE आदि शंकराचार्य (श्रेय) · 21 श्लोक · ~8th Century CE
Known universally by its thunderous refrain "Aigiri Nandini," the Mahishasura Mardini Stotram is attributed to Adi Shankaracharya and celebrates Goddess Durga's triumphant slaying of the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Each of its twenty-one verses builds in rhythmic intensity, painting vivid portraits of the Devi's beauty, valor, and compassion as she liberates the three worlds from demonic tyranny. Recited with special fervor during Navaratri, the stotram is one of the most beloved hymns in the Shakta devotional tradition.

You who dwell on the summit of the great Vindhya mountains, who are the radiance of Vishnu, praised by the victorious,
O Goddess, consort of the blue-throated Shiva, mother of a vast family, doer of boundless deeds,
Victory, victory to you, O Slayer of Mahishasura, with beautiful braided hair, O Daughter of the Mountain!
You who nourish the three worlds, who bring bliss to Shankara, who wash away all sin, who revel in sacred chanting,
You who are furious toward the Danavas and the sons of Diti, who dry up demonic arrogance, O Daughter of the Ocean,
Victory, victory to you, O Slayer of Mahishasura, with beautiful braided hair, O Daughter of the Mountain!
You who reside amid the lofty peaks of the crown-jewel Himalayas,
Sweet as honey, you who vanquished the demon Madhu and shattered Kaitabha, who rejoice in the divine dance,
Victory, victory to you, O Slayer of Mahishasura, with beautiful braided hair, O Daughter of the Mountain!
Whose lion mount tore apart the temples of enemy elephants with fierce and valiant trunk-like might,
Who with the staff of her own arms struck down warriors and toppled the heads of demon generals,
Victory, victory to you, O Slayer of Mahishasura, with beautiful braided hair, O Daughter of the Mountain!
Who in wise deliberation made the great Lord Shiva himself your messenger, O Mistress of the Pramathas,
Who brought death upon the evil-minded, sinful, and wicked demon messengers,
Victory, victory to you, O Slayer of Mahishasura, with beautiful braided hair, O Daughter of the Mountain!
Who hold the spotless trident high, piercing the heads of those who oppose the three worlds,
Whose victory is proclaimed by the thunderous beating of celestial war drums echoing across all directions,
Victory, victory to you, O Slayer of Mahishasura, with beautiful braided hair, O Daughter of the Mountain!
Who in the fury of battle dried up every drop of blood from which Raktabija endlessly regenerated,
Whose terrifying war against Shumbha and Nishumbha gratified the spirits and ghouls of the battlefield,
Victory, victory to you, O Slayer of Mahishasura, with beautiful braided hair, O Daughter of the Mountain!
Whose golden arrows fly from the quiver to pierce the foremost warriors and shatter their horns of pride,
Who routed the enemy's four-fold army across the battlefield in a spectacle of many-hued valor,
Victory, victory to you, O Slayer of Mahishasura, with beautiful braided hair, O Daughter of the Mountain!
Who delight in the curious songs sung to rhythmic beats of varied percussion,
Who rejoice in the deep, steady sound of the mridanga drum, dhudhukuta dhukkuta dhimdhimita,
Victory, victory to you, O Slayer of Mahishasura, with beautiful braided hair, O Daughter of the Mountain!
