Revealed to the sage Vishvamitra during deep meditation, the Gayatri Mantra appears in the Rig Veda (3.62.10) and is considered the most sacred verse in all of Vedic literature. Vishvamitra was originally a Kshatriya king who undertook extreme austerities to become a Brahmarishi, and this mantra emerged from his realization of the supreme light of consciousness. Traditionally, it was imparted during the Upanayana (sacred thread) ceremony, marking a student's entry into Vedic study.
